Pepetela, geboren 1941 in Benguela, Angola, studierte in Portugal, bevor er aus politischen Gründen ins Exil nach Algerien ging. 1969 schloss er sich der Guerilla zur Befreiung Angolas an und fing an zu schreiben. Nach der Unabhängigkeit war er einige Jahre Vizeminister für Bildung, seit 1982 ist er Professor für Soziologie an der Universität in Luanda, wo er auch lebt. Er gehört zu den wichtigsten Autoren Angolas und erhielt die höchsten Auszeichnungen für sein Werk, u. a. 1997 den Prémio Camões.Barbara Mesquita, geboren in Bremen, ist Spezialistin für die lusofonen Länder Afrikas. Sie hat u. a. Patrícia Melo, Juan Manuel de Prada und Luis Fernando Veríssimo übersetzt. Barbara Mesquita lebt in Hamburg und manchmal in Lissabon.
